The crews doing this work should come from the communities carrying the risk.

Fuel management, hazard-tree removal, thinning and fire-guard construction are recurring, fundable, multi-season work — and the same land carries the trail networks and the visitor economy they support. The training is achievable in a matter of weeks. The communities most exposed to wildfire are usually the ones with the least local capacity to do it.

The work

What fuel management actually involves

The phrase covers a set of quite specific field tasks, most of which need certified operators and none of which can be done by an untrained crew safely or to standard.

  • Thinning and spacing — reducing stem density so a fire cannot carry through the canopy
  • Understory and ladder-fuel removal — clearing the material that takes a ground fire up into the crowns
  • Hazard-tree assessment and felling — dead and damaged stems near roads, trails, structures and worksites
  • Debris handling — piling, chipping, hauling or controlled disposal of the material removed
  • Fire-guard and access construction — machine work to build breaks and to get crews and equipment to the ground in the first place
  • Post-fire recovery — salvage, danger-tree removal, erosion control and re-establishing access after a fire has gone through

Certifications the work requires

Site tickets are the gate. A crew without them cannot be insured on the ground, regardless of how capable they are. These are in our catalogue and can be built into a funded program as part of the training plan.

What our certifications do and do not cover

Our catalogue is delivered online. Several tickets required in this work — fall protection, rigging and slinging, aerial lift, boom truck and forklift among them — carry a mandatory in-person practical component under provincial regulation. For those, our course covers the theory portion only and a practical evaluation must be completed separately. We identify which is which at scoping, and budget the practical component into the program rather than leaving a graduate holding a half-finished ticket.

Why it suits community-based delivery

Fuel management is close to the ideal community project. The work is beside the community rather than a fly-in camp away from it. It recurs — treated stands need maintenance, and the treatable area near most communities is measured in years of work rather than weeks. It is fundable through wildfire risk reduction and forestry workforce programs. And it produces exactly the crew and equipment base a community needs to start contracting the work rather than watching it be procured elsewhere.

Before anyone is on the ground

Land-based work needs authorisation as well as funding — tenure, permits or a partnership agreement with the authority responsible for the land. No funder pays for work you have no legal authority to perform, and this is regularly the item that delays a season. We settle it at scoping.

Trails & the visitor economy

The trail is infrastructure — and the corridor is a fire break

Trail work is often assumed to be volunteer work with hand tools. New construction, reroutes and post-event repair are machine work performed to an engineered standard, and they are exactly the kind of project a training program can be delivered on:

  • Corridor clearing — brushing, hazard-tree removal and vegetation management along the alignment
  • Trail construction and reroute — bench cut, grading, surfacing and compaction to a sustainable grade
  • Drainage and erosion control — culverts, ditching, water bars and armouring. This is what decides whether a trail survives the next freshet or storm
  • Structures and trailheads — small bridges, boardwalk, retaining work, parking, access roads and site servicing
  • Backcountry access — the road and route work that gets crews, equipment and emergency response to the trail at all

A cleared trail corridor functions as a fuel break and as an access route for crews, and post-fire, trail networks are among the first pieces of visitor infrastructure that need danger-tree removal, erosion control and rebuilding before they can reopen.

The practical consequence is a longer season. A crew certified for chainsaw work, ground disturbance and equipment operation can be on fuel management in the spring, trail construction through the summer, and recovery or road work in the autumn. The same tickets, the same machines

Everything in the certification table above carries straight onto trail work, with the excavator as the primary trail-building machine. One funded program covers both halves of this pillar.

Who the partners usually are

Trail projects tend to have more parties than any other kind we work on: the First Nation whose territory the corridor crosses, the regional or municipal government, the provincial land authority, the tourism association, and often a trail society that has maintained it for years.

Coordinating that group — and building an application that satisfies each one's requirements — is most of the difficulty and most of the value.

That is the standard starting position. The training is a matter of weeks; the funding and the authorisations are what take planning.
